Lake Como is a large and scenic lake in Northern Italy in the foothills of the Alps. It has something to offer all types of pooches and their owners. There are many dog friendly villas in Lake Como and lots of entertainment options. You and your pup can take a stroll on the beach, go hiking or enjoy a delicious authentic Italian meal in one of the many pet friendly restaurants.

Dog Friendly Villas in Lake Como

Lake Como has a lot of accommodation options for those travelling with their pets. Although there are several pet friendly hotels we would generally recommend going for a self-catering private villa to give you and your dog the true freedom that you want on your holidays. There are lots of dog friendly villas in Lake Como. Check out the town of Menaggio and the surrounding villages for a lot of quaint and cosy cottages. Sitting several hundred meters above sea level on the Western shore of Lake Como the views from here are beautiful.

Another great spot is the area of Lierna on the Eastern shore of Lake Como. This area has a stunning white beach and a well preserved ancient village in which you can find a Romanesque Church with frescoes that date back almost 600 years. On top of this the area is also home to a fantastic selection of the dog friendly villas in Lake Como. If you have still not found what you are looking for check out places in and around Varenna and/or Bellagio – both in the Lombardia area. Pet Friendly Beaches

Lake Como covers nearly 150 km2 and so has a lot of beautiful beaches to choose from. Dogs are allowed to swim in the lake and there are many of these pet friendly beaches, these are just some of them. Abbadia Lariana and San Siro are dog friendly beaches made up of white pebbles, the first is one the Eastern shore and the latter the Western. The Eastern shore also has Mandello del Lario, Lierna and Varenna. The Western shore’s dog friendly beaches include Dongo, Domaso, Gravedona and Menaggio.

Walks for you and your Pooch

Thanks to its location Lake Como has lots of walking routes that you can explore with your dog. There are routes of varying difficultly depending on how fit you – and your four legged friend – are feeling. Varenna is on the Eastern shore of the lake and has lots of pretty walking routes surrounding it. You can follow an old mule path from the town and within the hour be exploring the ruins of medieval castle. From here you can meander through a wooded area and olive groves emerging at Fiumelatte : the shortest river in Italy! Then you can descend back to Verenna.

This is quite a short walk, if you’re feeling more adventurous there is a circular walk from Tremezzo. This walk takes roughly 3.5 hours with an ascent of 680 meters. Starting in Tremezzo you go via Intignano, Capelletta degli Alpini, Monti di Nava and then circle back around again. It gets very steep at points and we would recommend hiking boots and walking sticks. En route you can expect to see some 16th and 17th palaces, San Pietro and Paulo churches and a small picnic area with amazing views over the lake and beyond.

Places to Eat

After all the walking, beaches and exploring you and your dog are sure to want some refreshment. Luckily there are lots of dog friendly places to eat around the Lake Como area. On the Piazza Cavour in Como itself is a lovely little casual restaurant that accommodates pets. ‘Why Not?’ serves up pizzas, sandwiches, burgers, brushettas for a decent price and has a large outdoor dining space on the piazza.

‘OX Como’ is a bar/restaurant/pub that has a good range of food including lots of sea food, shows sports on the big TV and is very dog friendly. You can find ‘OX Como’ on the Piazza Alcide De’ Gasperi 6, they have really lovely staff and even offer diners free limoncello.
