Honestly, we could talk about pet friendly holidays in The Lake District all day. Spectacularly dramatic and the largest National Park in the country, the region’s got it all. You’ll find walks with scenery you won’t be able to take your gaze from, all kinds of warm welcomes in the pubs and restaurants that dot the landscape, and some inspiring days out. And just think, you’ll have your pet with you to make it even more special.

Pet friendly walks in the Lake District

We’ll start with those Lake District walks (well it’s the Lake District after all). One of the region’s most striking spots has got to be Derwentwater in Keswick, and it was even the setting for scenes in the Star Wars Episode II: The Force Awakens. There’s a nine mile route that circles the lake, and if you start at The Moot Hall you can pick up maps and info before you set off.

Described by Wordsworth himself as “the loveliest spot that man had found”, the little village of Grasmere is one of the region’s most famous corners. The terrain in the area’s a little…shall we say…challenging in places, but if you’re ok with that you’ll be treated to some of the Lake District’s most inspiring views on the routes that surround the village.

Pet friendly places to eat and drink in the Lake District

As you can imagine, all that hilly terrain will have you dreaming of somewhere welcoming to whet you’re whistle, and there’s certainly no shortage at all when it comes to pet friendly places to eat in the Lake District. To name a few, your pet will be welcome at The Pheasant in Bassenthwaite, The Coledale Inn in Braithewaite and The Bridge Inn in Buttermere. Not only does every name seem to sound as though it might feature in Harry Potter, but each pub has a reputation for serving hearty fodder in a relaxing atmosphere.

Pet friendly things to do in the Lake District

There’s something invigorating about the beauty of the Lake District, and there are all kinds of things to do and see while you’re in the region with your dog. We reckon you have to enjoy a boat trip on at least one of the lakes during your stay, and dogs are welcome aboard Windermere Lake Cruises. The landscape looks even more dazzling from the water, and the cruise is a lovely way to experience the colours of the landscape too.

What’s a family holiday without chugging away an hour or two on a steam railway? Dogs are welcome on the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, so you can journey through the countryside in style. The line runs for seven miles (from Ravenglas to Dalegarth), and pets are welcome to ride too for a small charge.

Pet friendly days out in the Lake District

There are some unforgettable pet friendly days out in the Lake District, and we love the fact that every day can be different when you’re staying in the region. Dogs are welcome on leads at the The Longholm Kitchen and Walled Garden on the north-western shore of Derwentwater. Beatrix Potter and her family stayed at the house for holidays on several occasions, and the original garden was the inspiration for the garden in The Tale of Peter Rabbit!

Tucked in 130 acres of woodland and garden, Lowther Castle and Gardens is also pet friendly. Dogs are welcome to enjoy the grounds on leads, and there are special dog friendly tables in the café so they can join you for that pit stop too.
